Several different vascular studies are conducted at the Wound Care Center. We measure the amount of oxygen that is present in tissue in different areas of the limb to determine if adequate oxygen is present for healing. Through Doppler technology, we can assess how much blood is flowing to an area. This gives us information on perfusion of the tissue and also helps confirm the reliability of the oxygen measurement. Finally, through blood pressure studies, we can measure the amount of blood that is flowing through major arterial channels in the foot compared to the arm, which is a good indicator of if there is enough blood flow for wound healing. Using all three measurements together is what allows us to decide if more blood flow is necessary or if further treatment is needed.
