Molecular Diagnostics
The current culturing technique used by most physicians is over 150 years old and very inadequate in diagnosing most clinical infections. Culturing on petri dishes takes several days sometimes to isolate the bacteria and usually selects for only one bacteria when wounds are polymicrobial. DNA-based techniques (molecular diagnostics) offer much more rapid results, much more sensitive results, much more accurate results and have the ability to add quantitative information, which is invaluable in managing most clinical infections. Within hours we are able to isolate the bacteria from our wound cultures.
