How hyperbaric oxygen treatment is done
Patients can undergo hyperbaric oxygen treatment in a single individual hyperbaric oxygen unit or a multi-individual hyperbaric oxygen room.
The single hyperbaric oxygen unit is meant for only one person. You will be made to lie down on a table that slides into a pressurized plastic cylinder.
The multi-individual hyperbaric oxygen room is meant for more than one person. Multiple patients can undergo treatment simultaneously.
You can lie on a bed or sit comfortably on a chair. Your doctor may place an oxygen mask your face or place a clear hood placed over your head through which you breathe in the oxygen. The air pressure in the room is about two or three times more than normal air pressure.
The amount of oxygen you receive is multiple times more than the normal amount of oxygen. This increases the amount of oxygen in the blood which helps to restore normal levels of blood gases and tissue function which promotes healing.
It may take as long as 2 hours for the treatment to be completed. Subsequently, you might be required to take brief breaks to prevent oxygen poisoning and prevent your body tissues from taking in excess oxygen.
