How hyperbaric oxygen therapy is performed
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is performed as an outpatient procedure. You can go back home immediately after completing the procedure.
The therapy can be performed in two settings.

Individual hyperbaric oxygen unit
The individual hyperbaric oxygen unit is a unit designed for one person. It is an oxygen chamber where you will be made to lie down on a table that slides into a clear pressurized plastic tube. You will breathe in an increased amount of oxygen inside the pressurized plastic tube.
Multi-person hyperbaric oxygen room
This is an oxygen room designed to accommodate several people. You may sit on a chair or lie on a bed in the oxygen room. A mask or clear hood will be placed over your head through which you will breathe in oxygen.
The oxygen you breathe in a pressurized room is multiple times the normal oxygen content you breathe in the air. You may feel a temporary feeling of fullness in the air when in the pressurized room. You can relieve this by swallowing saliva or yawning.
You may be required to take short breaks to breathe normal air so as to prevent oxygen poisoning. Taking short breaks also prevents the tissues in the body from accumulating excess oxygen.
The therapy may last for as more as 2 hours or as short as a few minutes depending on the nature of infection or condition. If your condition is very serious or highly deteriorating, you may be required to repeat the procedure again after a while.
